Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our approach to blade edge retention; the ability of a blade edge to stay sharp is a dramatic deviation from almost 3,000 years of thinking on the topic. The prevailing approach to keeping a blade edge sharp longer is to make the edge harder so it takes longer for the metal to wear away. This approach focuses on the rate of edge wear. To understand, in general, how most edges wear visualize the letter “V” with the bottom point of the “V” being the part of blade edge that contacts whatever material you are attempting to cut. Regardless of how hard or soft the cutting material is, there will be friction between the blade and the material you are cutting. Over time, as you cut, that point on the “V” or blade edge wears away. That blade edge material is gone, and you are left with a blade edge that is now shaped more like a “U”. This is a dull knife. A Relentless knife uses our Power Strip to create a difference in hardness between the two sides of the blade edge that results in one side, the soft side of the blade, wearing faster and along the hard side of the blade, the Power Strip side. This differential in hardness and resulting wear is our approach to controlling how the edge wears, instead of the rate of wear. Our thinking is “if the edge wears to a sharp edge vice a dull edge as you cut, then the rate of wear is irrelevant.” To better understand Relentless’ approach, visualize the same “V”. As you cut with a Relentless knife the soft side wears faster and along the harder side. Over time, a long time, the result of that wear will resemble a “y”. The result is a blade edge that stays sharper much longer than our competitors’ knives and allows us to use softer metals, such as Titanium to make our products. Titanium is stronger, lighter, more flexible, handles extreme temperatures better, and best of all WILL NEVER RUST!

  • Our journey began in 2007 when some fisherman friends asked George H. Lambert if he could make a fillet knife that stayed sharp, wouldn’t rust, and had a grip that kept you in control under all conditions. He had no intention of creating a company at that time, it was simply a challenge and a problem to solve as a knife maker and fisherman. His goal was to make a knife that accomplished these three things and, as each goal was accomplished, the unrelenting pursuit of perfection drove our thinking and resulted in continued improvements and refinements. We spared no expense in making what we believe to be the best cutting tools and the most advanced and revolutionary cutting-edge technology.

Today, our knives are made with the best materials, including aerospace grade Titanium, crushed diamonds, Tungsten carbide, glass-reenforced ABS plastic and high grade treated leather. Titanium is more expensive than iron and steel, due to difficulty in fabrication, and its availability. Most of the work that goes into our knives is done by hand with about 45 minutes of hands-on labor to produce one knife and one sheath. The resulting product is one that should last a lifetime and provide unparalleled performance. Finally, we’ll get old together; for as long as you own your knife, we will stand behind it, performing maintenance and repairs to keep your Relentless knife going strong.

  • Sharpness is subjective. Relentless doesn’t advocate any particular method nor do we recommend performing any sharpness test involving putting the blade in contact with any part of your body unless you are trained in performing these various tests. Some people place the blade vertically on a 45-degree angled PVC pipe or a fingernail to check sharpness, others may cut arm hair, others use equipment to measure sharpness, some use their finger across the blade edge, while others cut various objects to assess sharpness. At Relentless we use a PVC pipe at a 45-degree angle and cut a ½” sisal rope to assess sharpness. It’s not only part of the sharpening process it is also part of the final inspection process. Every one of our knives is sharpened by hand on a grinder. We go through three different belt grits while many knife makers only complete two. During the first 2 grinding steps we check sharpness on the PVC pipe. After the first two belt grinds, we check sharpness by cutting the ½” sisal rope to check how clean the blade cuts, the sound of the blade cutting and the feel. If the knife passes, if goes for a third polish grind to not only make the cutting-edge sharper, but also smooth. If the knife does not pass the first cut test, it is resharpened and checked until the entire blade passes before going for the final polish grind. After the knife is sharpened and after it completes final cleaning and inspection, the same sharpness test on the ½ sisal rope is performed just before we put your Relentless knife in its box.

  • There are many ways to determine if your Relentless knife is sharp. Relentless doesn’t advocate any method nor do we recommend performing any sharpness test involving putting the blade in contact with any part of your body unless you are trained in performing these various tests. Sharpness is very subjective and, depending on the application that you are using your Relentless knife for, you will likely have an expectation of how long you can use your knife before it “normally” needs to be re-sharpened. The simplest answer is if it is performing the task without any issues such as rough cuts, significant dragging, requires excess pressure to complete the cut or not cutting completely through the material that you are cutting, then your knife likely requires blade maintenance or sharpening. There are tools that can measure your knife’s sharpness and techniques that you can perform.

  • Because we have redefined the properties of a cutting edge through our new technology, this is one of the more challenging aspects of a Relentless knife to explain. We will start with what sharpening is in the conventional sense. Most knife blades are generally “V” shaped with the bottom point of the “V” being the part of blade edge that contacts whatever material you are attempting to cut. Regardless of how hard or soft the cutting material is, there will be friction between the blade and the material that you are cutting. Over time, as you cut, that point on the “V” or blade edge wears away. That blade edge material is gone, and you are left with a blade edge that is now shaped more like a “U”. To “sharpen” a knife you are essentially grinding the “U” back into a “V”. It is unlikely that you will get the same angle back on the edge and you will remove blade material during the grinding or sharpening process. To better understand sharpening a Relentless knife, visualize the same “V”. As you cut with a Relentless knife the soft side wears faster and along the harder side. Over time, a long time, the result of that wear will resemble a “y”. When you perform edge maintenance, or “sharpen” a Relentless knife, all that you are doing is trying to remove the leg of the “y” to return the blade edge to a “V” shape. This process is much easier and requires very little effort. So, the answer is, “Yes, you will at some point, down the road, have to sharpen your Relentless knife”. However, it is a simple process that is functionally different than sharpening a conventional blade.

  • To better understand sharpening a Relentless knife, visualize the same “V”. As you cut with a Relentless knife the soft side wears faster and along the harder side. Over time, a long time, the result of that wear will resemble a “y”. When you perform edge maintenance or “sharpen” a Relentless knife all that you are doing is trying to remove the leg of the “y” to return the blade edge to a “V” shape. This process is much easier and requires very little effort. We recommend that you use any sandpaper that is 400 grit or higher and place it on a soft object like a mouse pad. Place your Relentless knife at a 20° angle with the Power Strip facing up, the medallion facing down on top of the sandpaper. You should be able to read “DO NOT SHARPEN THIS SIDE”. Applying gentle downward pressure, drag the knife across the sandpaper adjusting to keep the blade edge perpendicular to the sandpaper. Repeat these 2 to 3 more times and you are done. Check for sharpness and repeat as necessary.

  • Over time, your Relentless knife blade edge wear will result in the softer side having worn significantly more than the harder edge. We assess that the time for this to occur will vary based on the type of material normally cut, the frequency of use, variations in cutting styles and a host of other variables. Some of our captains have filleted 2,000-3,000 fish and their knives are still going strong, other fillet hundreds before they feel the knife needs to be sharpened. Some use the knife for a year or more, while others will go several months before they assess the need to sharpen their knife. A Relentless knife wears differently than any other knife or cutting tool. See “sharpening” and determining if your knife is sharp. Sometimes during use, the edge can be damaged whether by being dropped or cutting into something extremely hard. In other instances, people have unintentionally damaged or tried to sharpen the wrong side of the blade edge. In any case, sharpening is a breeze and if you prefer, you can always send it to us and we’ll take care of it for you.

  • Let’s start with what it means for the Power Strip to wear away. For the purposes of this question, we consider edge wear to be erosion of the blade edge through use and sharpening over time such that the edge and overall blade size are significantly smaller than when the knife was new. You may see the paint in the Power Strip fade or disappear over time, but you can rest assured that the Tungsten carbide and diamond Power Strip is still there performing as it was designed. This is not considered Power Strip wear. Over time the edge of every single blade will wear away. A Relentless edge will wear at a much slower rate. We have been making our knives in various stages of development for over 17 years and have yet to have a knife get close to the point where we would consider reapplying our Power Strip or performing any maintenance to the Power Strip. Traditional sharpening will expedite blade edge erosion. A Relentless knife will never require conventional sharpening after the original factory edge is put on the knife, so this will not affect wearing of the Perpetual EdgeTM.

  • The aggregate on the handle is durable and should provide many years of unparalleled grip. You may notice some “smoothing” of the grip over time based on the frequency of use, the operating environment, whether you use gloves or not, and exposure to chemicals and cleaners. We recommend that you avoid contact with chemicals and cleaners and that you rinse your Relentless knife with fresh water and soap only.

  • One of the down sides to using Titanium is that it is a soft metal. It is prone to scratching so scratches on the blade, in some cases from the factory are normal. While it is extremely durable and resilient it takes very little to scratch a Titanium blade. While it may detract from the knifes appearance, rest assured it does nothing to affect performance.

  • Your Titanium Relentless knife will never rust. Titanium is reliant on the presence of oxygen to form titanium oxide. The thin layer of titanium oxide formed around the outside of pure titanium is the key to its corrosion resistance.

  • In applications requiring light weight, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and high-temperature resistance, titanium can be a better choice than steel. This makes titanium ideal for use in aerospace, medical devices, chemical processing, marine, and high-temperature industrial applications. (Consider adding here how strong/flexible it is but its unique properties are sometimes a challenge for certain industries. We’ve found a way to enhance the amazing qualities of titanium to make it a powerhouse with purpose.

  • The Power Strip is made of Tungsten carbide applied through spark deposition, crushed diamonds applied through laser deposition and other proprietary materials. The Power Strip on a Relentless knife is more than 2-times harder than the substrate titanium on the other side of the blade edge

  • We recommend that you clean your Relentless knives with fresh water and liquid dish soap. Do not us abrasive polishes and cleaners, do not use chemicals or other cleaning agents.

  • No. There is no need to use chemicals or cleaning agents. Simply rinse your Relentless knives in clean fresh water and liquid dish soap then rinse again with just clean fresh water.

  • No.

  • The vast majority of our customers prefer a storage sheath, not a carry sheath, so we elected to go that route. We did consider adding a belt loop of slits to slip a belt through, but decided against it during the design process when we realized that the belt loop would interfere with the secure strap and the slits have been more work than they are worth.
